Marley clay roof tiles on a production line

Marley leads the way with EPDs

At Marley, we are constantly evolving our product, system and service offering to support the construction industry in tackling the key challenges of today. None more important than highlighting and understanding the affect we can have on our planet through the way we operate, source raw materials and how we manufacture our products.

Achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 in the construction sector is a significant task, but one we can all work towards. We recognise that Architects, Specifiers, Contractors and Developers play a crucial role in achieving this vision through the products they specify and install. That's why we feel it is important that as a manufacturer, we play our part by offering transparent environmental performance data for our products, to allow informed decisions to be made about the materials and products selected by specifiers.

We are proud to be the first roof tile manufacturer to offer Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) for our entire clay and concrete roof tile range, alongside our already established Solar PV EPD.

What is an EPD?

An EPD assesses the environmental impact of a product through its entire life cycle, taking into consideration the manufacturing, transportation, assembly, use, removing and recycling or disposal of the product. Essentially, it's a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

So why have an EPD if we already have LCAS?

A Life Cycle Assessment can be produced by a manufacturer, who may be making favourable assumptions such as the longevity of a product, that can impact or skew the results. An EPD however, is issued by an independent Programme Operator, following a set of Product Category Rules (PCR), ensuring the products are assessed in a consistent and unbiased manner. This process is controlled by ISO and EN standards.

LCA + Product category rules = EPD

How is an EPD created?

Within an EPD, the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is split into 17 distinct modules. For ease the 17 modules are sometimes further split into five key areas. Specifiers can assess which life cycle contributes the most to the environmental impact of the product
